The short version
In late September 2026, the memory market produced a signal more disruptive than a price increase: the quotes themselves disappeared.
Samsung suspended October DDR5 DRAM contract quotes first, with SK hynix and Micron following. Quote resumption is now expected in mid-November. Samsung's message to downstream customers was blunt — "nothing to sell." DDR5 spot prices jumped roughly 25% in a single week, and Q4 contract negotiations entered a vacuum.
This is not a price increase. It is the disappearance of the basis for negotiation. When prices rise, you at least know what to pay. When quotes stop, you have no anchor at all.
Read the structure before reacting
Samsung's move is not isolated. TrendForce raised its 4Q26 contract price forecast on September 24, and the divergence it revealed is extreme:
Segment | 4Q26 contract price QoQ | Context |
Server RDIMM | +18% to +23% | CSPs adding orders for agentic AI; LTAs cap some buyers |
Enterprise QLC SSD | +23% to +28% | Riding KV cache demand, accelerating against the trend |
Overall DRAM | +10% to +15% | Capacity shifted to server DRAM and HBM |
PC DRAM | +3% to +8% | Cost pass-through cut notebook shipments |
Mobile LPDDR | 0% to +5% | High brand inventory, momentum fading |
Overall NAND | +15% to +20% | Up sharply from July's 0%-5% forecast |
The takeaway: this rally runs on a single engine — AI. Server RDIMM rises 18%-23% while mobile DRAM may move only 0%-5%. If your part numbers sit in the consumer segment, you should not be accepting server-grade increases.
Three paths that work when quotes stop
Path 1: Replace fixed pricing with floating pricing
Insisting on fixed-price contracts during a quote suspension only stalls negotiations. A three-part structure moves things forward:
· Benchmark — index-linked (e.g. TrendForce spot or contract pricing)
· Floating band — agreed floor and ceiling, with renegotiation triggers outside the band
· Volume guarantee — price floats, but quantity is locked. In a quote vacuum, this is what is genuinely scarce
The correct objective during a suspension is not a lower price. It is continuity of supply.
Path 2: Measure fill rate instead of lead time
Lead times have stopped being reliable. Deutsche Bank's September distributor channel check found that DDR5 RDIMM fill rates for non-hyperscale customers fell below 30% — a quoted 52-week lead time may deliver far worse than advertised.
Work backwards from fill rate instead:
1. Compare ordered versus received volume per part number over the last three months
2. Derive the real gap from actual fill rate, not nominal lead time
3. Allocate expedite and substitution resources by gap severity
Path 3: Start alternative qualification now
A quote vacuum is the best possible moment to push alternative sourcing, because urgency unblocks internal approvals.
· DDR4 route: at retail, DDR4 remains roughly 56% cheaper per GB than DDR5 — the only genuine cost reduction available today. Note that DDR4 supply is under even more pressure, so lock volume while you qualify.
· Chinese dual-sourcing: CXMT announced volume production on its G5 DRAM platform on September 20, with die output per wafer up more than 50%, applying deflationary pressure on commodity DRAM. Consumer and industrial parts can enter qualification, but budget 6-9 months — this is not a stopgap for a current shortage.
What HallChip does about it
We handle the uncertainty up front:
· We cover 14 global chip brands — TI, Infineon, ST, ADI, onsemi, NXP, Diodes, Allegro, Melexis, TDK-Micronas, AKM, ROHM, Honeywell and SEIKO NPC — with established channels across both the memory and power constraint lines
· For parts in a quote suspension, we provide spot benchmarking, alternative cross-reference and dual-source recommendations, so you can establish a cost baseline even without published pricing
· For upcoming price-increase effective dates, we help you place orders or secure written price holds before the old price expires
· For parts entering LTB (last-time-buy) or subject to a PCN, we supply migration paths and recommended alternatives
We won't promise stock that doesn't exist. We will tell you plainly whether a part is obtainable now, roughly at what level, and what the alternatives are.
💡 Immediate deadlines: Allegro's full-portfolio increase takes effect October 1 (no exemptions), onsemi follows October 10, NXP's RF power LTB closes September 30, and ROHM's PCN response window closes September 30. All four land this week.
